Building Donor Relationships (BDR)
(October 11 – 12)

Philanthropic solicitation today is very challenging, requiring that practitioners stand out and build strong, sustainable relationships among donors. Stronger relationships build a reliable, expanding base where your donors evolve toward greater levels of giving. BDR is designed for professionals in roles such as advancement, development, gift officer, or fundraiser.

This two-day workshop is an interactive, skill-building experience focused on developing interpersonal influence skills. BDR has been custom-designed for advancement professionals and is proven effective. It incorporates electronic Prework, along with learning by doing. Sixty percent of the program time is devoted to intensive skill practice and feedback, centered on each participant’s own real-life donor situations, rather than generic, textbook exercises.

Those attending BDR also receive valuable feedback and do action-planning to put their new skills into practice right away.

Participants Takeaways

  • Learn probing and interpersonal communication skills to uncover the real passions of potential donors
  • Identify and utilize the powerful personal needs of major donors, the needs that drive their decision-making
  • Manage donor resistance — those objections, barriers, and “showstoppers” that frustrate or derail fundraising efforts
  • Work effectively with the many challenging behaviors that are encountered.

This workshop will be held on the campus of Washington University in St. Louis, MO, at the Charles F. Knight Executive Education & Conference Center, Olin Business School.

Instructor for BDR is William Beane, Ph.D., Senior Vice President, Client Services at Psychological Associates. He designed BDR and has conducted BDR client workshops.
